China's 12-inch silicon wafer maker Xi'an Eswin Material Technology said monthly output and sales of its 12-inch electronic-grade silicon wafers have both exceeded 1 million units, marking a further increase in its mass-production scale.

SK Siltron has begun volume production and customer shipments from a KRW2.3 trillion (approx. US$1.54 billion) expansion of its Gumi wafer plant in South Korea, Newsisreported, as the company ramps up supplies of 300mm silicon wafers used to manufacture advanced memory chips.

IBM is building a foundry to produce silicon wafers used in quantum-computing processors, seeking to become an indispensable part of the quantum economy under development. Called Anderon, the independent subsidiary is set to begin production this year, a decade after IBM began exploring applications of quantum computing.
