China launches first 8-inch 2D chip line to bypass EUV limits

AtomIC’s 8-inch 2D semiconductor pilot line is a tactical detour around EUV constraints. It pressures domestic CVD tools, ultra-pure sputtering targets, and probe stations to rapidly adapt to novel channel materials—yet yield challenges could inflate pilot costs by over 30%. The U.S. BIS may soon restrict 2D chipmaking equipment exports, forcing Chinese firms into costly non-U.S. supply chains with extended lead times. While TSMC and Samsung aren’t publicly pursuing 2D paths, both are quietly assessing its viability beyond the 1nm node and may erect IP barriers. If AtomIC fails to demonstrate volume production in RF or sensing applications within 18 months, the effort risks becoming a technological dead end; success, however, could seed a localized heterogeneous integration ecosystem that undermines the hegemony of advanced-node scaling.
