AUO Micro LED CPO enters sampling stage

AUO’s entry into the sampling phase of Micro LED-based co-packaged optics (CPO) signals a strategic pivot from display panels to optical interconnect systems. Technically, this move pressures upstream GaN epitaxy and mass transfer processes to mature faster while accelerating standardization of low-power optical engines in AI servers downstream. Geopolitically, tightening U.S.-China export controls on advanced packaging could raise equipment acquisition costs and compel AUO to deepen integration with Taiwan, China’s local supply chain to mitigate disruption risks. Competitively, while Samsung and Sony lead in Micro LED displays, the CPO arena remains nascent—TSMC could counter rapidly via its CoWoS ecosystem or InFO-XP technology. Over the next 12–24 months, if AUO successfully transfers its panel-grade precision manufacturing to optical coupling tolerances, it may secure a foothold in mid-to-high-end CPO modules ahead of the AI datacenter surge, establishing a dual-growth engine across display and optical communications.
